•CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPUTER
Computer has made our life easier and fast. Due to popularity, computer has proved that it is a very powerful and useful tool,. We should know about the unique of characteristics of this wonder machine. Some of them are as follows:
1. SPEED
A computer is a very fast device. Computer can perform task (work) on a few seconds, whereas human being may take a year or even more. For instance, a PC (Personal Computer) can execute millions of instructions per second (MIPS) without any mistake. When, we increase the power of computer, the speed of computer increases automatically. For human, minimum measurement unit of time is the second. But for computer, it is measured by the thousand of a second, or milliseconds. Operations for larger processor are measured in microseconds, nanoseconds, and picosecond.
In other words we can say that a computer can do a work in a few minutes whereas a man may take his entire lifetime to the same work.
2. ACCURACY
A computer performs all operations (calculations) with the same accuracy. The accuracy of a computer system is very high. Of the result of any calculating machine is incorrect, it is useless. Computer makes mistakes rarely. Generally, Computer can perform accurately all types of complex computation. The error of a computer is quite small and it is often traceable to incorrect data.
3. STORAGE CAPABILITY (POWER OF REMEMBERING)
A computer can store huge amount of data. Human remember only important information which may be lost as the time passed. But a computer has permanent storage device. When we want any information, we can retrieve anything at anytime in few seconds. So, one of the vital characteristics of computer is capability of storing as well as retrieving information in a fast and efficient manner for long period.
4. VERSATILITY
The most wonderful feature of a computer is its versatility. We can perform various types of job on computer within a very short time. Computer is capable of performing almost any task at the same time. It can prepare a document in one moment, and can perform another task in next moment, and in between , it may help in bringing another document (i.e. letters, bill, results, etc.) in seconds.
5. CONSISTENCY / DILIGENCY
A computer can work for hours without being tried. It neither loses its concentration not becomes monotonous like human being. A computer can continuously work for hours without creating any error. It has no feelings and can not be one sad, bored, or depressed.
