DIGITAL COMPUTER

A computer which operates with data either in alphabet or numeric and is represented in a digital form is known as Digital Computer. This type of computer process data (including text, sound, graphics, and video) into digital value (i.e. 0s and 1s).the word digital means information is represented by variables. Variables refer a limited number of different values. These values are processed internally by components. The decimal digits (i.e. 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9) provide 10 different values. The digital computer is a digital system that performs various computational tasks. The first digital computer developed in 1940s.

Digital computer use the binary number system, which has two numbers :0 (zero) and 1 (one). A bit is a unit of memory. Data is represented in digital computer in group of bits. A group of bits can be made to represent not only binary numbers, but also other different symbols (i.e. decimal digits or letters of alphabet). The group of bits refers to develop complete set of instructions. Digital computers are most suitable for business application. Digital computer is used in a friendly manner.

A digital computer gives output (results) with more accuracy and at faster rate. The accuracy of this computer depends upon size of their register and memory. A digital computer accepts numbers and letters by different input devices. It converts data into electronic pulses (i.e. 0 and 1) to perform arithmetical operations. Not only this, but they are also capable of:

1• Performing logical operations, 
2• Storing data for processing, and 
3• Editing or deleting modifying the input data.

A desktop PC is a classic example of digital computer.

Advantages

1• It provides more accurately output.
2• It is faster.
3• These are more suitable for business application.

 Disadvantages

1• It is very costly. 
2• It is complex for programming.
3• It is slower than analog computer.

Digital computer can be classified on the basis of functionality (i.e. size and capability) method are as follows:
• Microcomputer
• Minicomputer
• Mainframe computer
• Supercomputer
